Mini splits are a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) alternative to larger HVAC systems requiring more room for ductwork and other equipment. Versatile, efficient, and very convenient, mini splits can function in various settings. Here are four creative ways to use mini splits anywhere.

Tiny Homes

Tiny homes and accessory dwelling units (ADUs)—scaled-down living spaces on a larger structure’s property—have been quite popular these last few years. As people seek to scale back and find more affordable living arrangements, they may still want the comforts of a larger home. Mini splits provide a way to handle climate control without taking up too much space. Easily installed up and out of the way on a wall, a single mini split can heat or cool an entire tiny home or ADU with no inconvenience to the dweller.

Sunrooms and Enclosed Patios

Quite often, a sunroom or enclosed patio is a later addition to a home, so it may not come with vents connected to the main HVAC unit. These rooms, by their nature, take in a lot of sun, which is pleasantly warm some of the time and unbearably hot at other times. Mini splits keep things cool without expending too much electricity, and you can shut them down when not needed. Mini splits equipped with heat pumps may also serve to keep sunrooms and patios warmer during the winter months, allowing for year-round enjoyment.

Garages and Workshops

If you like to work with your hands but don’t like working up too much of sweat while you tinker with arts, crafts, engines, or what have you, adding a mini split to a garage, workshop, shed, or similar place makes a normally uninsulated area of the home into a pleasant getaway and comfortable creative space. Be able to work on the hottest or coldest days, and add a level of climate control to protect tools, projects, and other sensitive materials that might not work as well in bitter or sweltering temperatures.

Vacation Homes

You may not want to set up a home you only visit a few times a year with an elaborate HVAC system. Fortunately, there’s no need to be uncomfortable when you stay there either. Setting up devices at different levels of the home is only one of several ways to efficiently use a mini split. Keep things cool or warm when you’re there, and engage a remote smart thermostat to start the mini split running before you get there. This way, things are already pleasant when you arrive.

Those are just four creative ways to use mini splits anywhere. Their size and versatility give any property—no matter its size, function, or distance—the ability to control the temperature and create a comfortable retreat for the inhabitants. If you’re looking for a handy alternative to larger HVAC systems, mini splits may be the way to go.
